Title: Evolution and Ecology of Extinct Species Revealed Through Fossil Data
Speaker: Mr. Tai Kubo (Lecturer, Waseda University Data Science Center)
Abstract: Paleontology, which reconstructs the evolution, ecology, and physiology of extinct organisms using fossils, may seem unrelated to data science. However, the accumulation of research data has accelerated due to decades of paleontological research, recent advances in analytical techniques, and an increase in the number of researchers. Consequently, research utilizing this data is also growing. This presentation will focus on the speaker’s own research, introducing attempts to statistically correlate quantitative evidence and ecology preserved in fossils with experiments on extant organisms. This correlation is used to infer the ecology of extinct species, such as their locomotion patterns and feeding habits. Additionally, research based on the phylogenetic relationships of extinct species will be introduced, aiming to clarify evolutionary patterns of ecology and past biogeographic changes.
