Title: Human Understanding and Human Extension through Wearable Computing Technology
Speaker: Ayumi Onishi (Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Kobe University)
Abstract: Wearable computing technology enables us to obtain a variety of information that was previously unknowable. Sensing enables us to understand humans better and to expand our capabilities. For example, orthotics that augment the senses, such as eyeglasses and hearing aids, are indispensable for improving the quality of life of people. Therefore, we are developing a wearable device that augments the five senses by taking into account the change in sensory capabilities during fatigue, which we call the five senses during fatigue. We are also working on smart shoes that recognize human behavior and situations while generating electricity with a power generation device embedded in the outsole of the shoes. One of the major issues for wearable devices is the power supply problem. In this presentation, we will introduce our research cases including such diverse collaborations.
